UDYOG 2022

Udyog, our unique career exploration program, held on Aug 27 2022, at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, brought together over 400 curious, young minds from 25 schools in Chennai and five great speakers who were not just successful in their chosen career paths but have either contributed immensely to the preservation of our culture and heritage or have dedicated their career towards improving and inspiring the lives of many.

Our first speaker Dr Sri. K. Ramasubramanian, Chair Professor, IIT Mumbai, is a great scholar with a doctorate in theoretical physics. His works have brought out the contributions of the Kerala school of mathematics and astrophysics which flourished in the medieval period. He has been the recipient of the prestigious Maharishi Bhadarayan Vyas Samman from the President of India. Also, he has been taking our glorious heritage to global platforms, inspiring so many around the globe and it is commendable that he not just preaches our values and customs but practices them too.

The Professor started the session by presenting the great Mathematical and astronomical contributions of India through the concepts of infinite series, the pi, magic squares, and indeterminate equations, also gave a glimpse of the poetic way of presenting the mathematical concepts through a verse from Bhaskaracharya’s work, which he pointed out that it simultaneously exposes us to learning Sanskrit, appreciate poetic beauty and learn the mathematical concepts in a way that is easy to remember. He believes that the new framework in the education system, “Rootedness and Pride in India” could create awareness of our ancient contributions in the young minds. He concluded by stating that in order ‘to become’ and not just ‘acquire’, in any path chosen, one might face several obstacles and it is in facing these obstacles and achieving, that we feel that we have lived a purposeful life.

The Session started with Sri Shantanu sharing his transformational journey of a college student who had the fear of public speaking to someone who has done 5000 debates on various tv channels today. He revealed that this change happened when he chose to move out of his comfort zone. Instead of settling down for stereotypical jobs, he kept moving from tech jobs to management or social sector jobs, to publish books and be a political analyst too. He advised children to embrace change and explore more. Very humbly he shared that all his achievements, even on the global platform, goes on to say that anybody can do anything. He also encouraged the children to joyfully experiment the ideas of gap year/homeschooling as life teaches more valuable lessons. It is this outlook that led him to the wonderful Ramayana School, through which Sri Shantanu has been inspiring numerous children across the globe.

The next speaker to adorn the stage was Sri Jayakumar, a researcher in the fields of classical music and dance, south Indian history and cultural history. He has been associated with various institutions as a faculty, educator and expert resource person. He is a classical musician trained in Kalakshetra. What is that you are proud of?” “Are you proud of the current India?” “What will you feel proud of in the next 25 years? “Name of the chief architect of Tanjore Brahdeeshwara temple” With these intriguing questions, he brought out the importance of understanding the greatness of our past, which, he believes will increase the chances of creating a better future. He defined the biggest role each student has to play in creating a better future is to not neglect the past. He brought out the richness of the tamil language, which vividly defines our nation. The interesting facts and details presented by Sri Jayakumar were sure to open the realm of history in the minds of the children to walk through our past to pave way for a glorious future.

Smt Janaki Sabesh started with a story that energized everyone present in the hall. Through this little, lovely story Smt. Janaki gave a beautiful message that stories are meant to be shared which if not might take any shape. The great takeaway message from her session was never to be apologetic for doing multiple things. Smt. Janaki concluded by saying give yourself the gift of time, never say no to opportunities, believe in people who believe in you and stay curious!

The final speaker for the day was Ms. Deepti Akki, who started the franchisee F45, a successful fitness studio and later started Monday monk to inculcate holistic fitness regimes. She is also an active mental health advocate and sustainable lifestyle promoter with a vision to positively impact as many lives in the holistic wellness space.

Ms. Deepti Akki, started the session with a small workout to find the balance in our body and the breath which is very vital to stay focused and have patience. She shared her ‘not so easy’ career journey, which started off as a Mechatronics engineering student.
