Lakshmi Varaham Bhaja Re | Thiruvidandhai | The Lord of Eternal Weddings
Lord Vishnu’s gatekeepers Jaya and Vijaya were cursed by four Sanaka sages to be born as asuras (demons) on earth. Accepting the curse as part of the Lord’s divine play, they took birth as the demon brothers Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu, sons of the sage Kashyapa and his wife Diti. Blessed with immense power, the brothers challenged the authority of the Devas. iranyaksha became a terror to the universe. He captured Bhudevi, the Earth goddess, and submerged her into the Garbhodaka Ocean, the primordial waters that surround the lower realms. Distressed by this act, the devas and sages approached Lord Vishnu for deliverance. Lord Vishnu incarnated as Varaha, a colossal and divine boar with powerful tusks.
Lord Varaha plunged into the depths of the cosmic ocean, where he confronted the mighty Hiranyaksha. A fierce duel ensued, lasting a thousand celestial years. Eventually, Lord Varaha defeated the demon and lifted the Earth on His tusks, restoring her to her rightful position in the universe. As He emerged from the waters, the earth goddess Bhudevi, overwhelmed by gratitude and devotion, fell in love with her savior. In divine reciprocation, Lord Varaha took her upon His lap—a moment believed to have occurred at a sacred site now celebrated as the abode of Nithyakalyana Perumal, with Goddess Lakshmi called as Komalavalli Thaayaar. It is also said that many celestial maidens wished to marry the majestic and divine
Varaha. Among them were 360 daughters of the sage Kalava, who desired that the Lord marry each of them. Granting this wish, Lord Varaha married one maiden each day over the course of a year. Because of this, He came to be known as Nithya Kalyana Perumal, “the Lord of Eternal Auspicious Marriages.”
