Jagannatho Mama Kula Deivatam | Thirumazhisai | Dakshina Jagannatham
Thirumazhisai is known as ‘mahIsArakshEtram’. In the thaniyan for thirumazhisai AzhwAr‘s thiruchchandha viruththam, thirukkachchi nambi says that:
ulagum mazhisaiyum uLLUrndhu thammil pulavar pugazhk kOlAl thUkka
ulagu thannai vaiththeduththa pakkaththum mAnIr mazhisaiyE vaiththeduththa pakkam validhu
Once many brahmarishis such as Athri, Bhrugu, Vasishta, BhArgava, and so on, went to sathyaloka and asked Brahma “Of the many places in bhooloka which is the place for performing penance. We desire to perform penance there”. Brahma then gets the measuring scale and keeps mahIsAra kshEthram on one side and rest of the world on the other side. The side which had mahIsAra kshEthram / thirumazhisai lowered, highliting that it is greater than the entire bhoolokam. The rishis saw that and become astonished about the glories of this small town in comparison to other places. Brahma said “As you can see, mahIsAra kshEthram is the best place for your penances. You all go there and perform your penances that will fulfill your desires”. Realizing the glory of the place, the sages performed penance here wishing for a kshetra for Jagannatha in between Puri and Thirupullani. Bhagavan granted them darshan in sitting form. While Lord Jagannatha appears reclining in Tirupullani (Dakshina Jagannatham) and standing in Puri (Utthara Jagannatham), He graces darshan here in sitting form, hence the place is revered as Madhya Jagannatham and Poorna Jagannatham.
The kshethram is the quintessence of all punya kshethrams as the kshEthram is mahIsAram and the Azhwar is bhaktisArar. As this is the birth place of saint Tirumazhisai Azhwar, the place also is named after the saint.
While Lord Shiva and Parvati Devi were passing on the sky in their Rishaba Vahana, they saw Tirumazhisai Azhwar deep in penance. Parvathi Devi suggested to Lord Shiva to pull in Azhwar for a word play. Lord Shiva did so and the talks ended in a debate. Pleased with the debating skill of Azhwar, Lord Shiva honoured him with the title “Bhakti Sara”. He is the only azhwar to have sung hymns for both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. He is said to have had his third eye (eye of wisdom) on his toe. There is a separate shrine for Azhwar in this temple.
Sri Jagannatha is in sitting position here with Sri Rukmini and Sri Satyabhama on His either side. His right leg is bent and His left leg is touching the ground. He has chakra on His right hand. The Sages Brighu and Markandeya are sitting at His feet. It is believed that worshipping Sri Jagannatha Swamy would alleviate the ill effects of past deeds.
In the wall of the main sanctum, we get to have the darshan of Lord Ganesha with Rahu and Ketu as His hip belts. It is believed that worshipping Sri Ganesha here would alleviate the ill effects of planetary alignments in the horoscope. In the northern side of the Maha Mantap, we get the darshan of Sri Thirumazhisai Alwar. He is in sitting position with folded hands. He is blessed with the eye on the left toe. Having the darshan of this eye is called Nethra darshan and it is said to alleviate eye related problems.
The Sthala Vruksham of the temple is Parijatha tree. The temple tank is called as Brighu Pushkarini.
Sri Swamiji sings in praise of this kshetra in this soothing kirtan set in Raga Yamuna Kalyani.
