The very purpose of performing rites and rituals is to attain chittha shuddhi (purity of thought). If these karmas are performed in an incorrect manner, for self interest and pomp, with a lot of compromise, pride and hypocrisy, not only will it result in further impurity, but will also prove detrimental.

Every day I meet people who are keen on performing rites and rituals for their dead forefathers (‘pitru karmas’) as prescribed by our Scriptures. I ask them one simple question, ‘Why do you perform these rites?’ The spontaneous answer that I hear from every other friend is ‘Scriptures say that if I miss doing it, I will accumulate sins. I better do it for the welfare of myself and my family!’ It is surprising that I have not heard from a single individual a response that he performs it for the happiness and well-being of his ancestors! Oh! Well! That confirms my perception that every man on earth is self-centered.
